10 Summer BBQ Hacks

food, living

(or how to pretend like you know what you’re doing)

The people in the cooking shows make it all look so easy, but don’t worry, I’m on your side. As the guests roll in and you’re trying to squeeze together space in your fridge as you trip over your cat in a panic, dropping the ice that’s freezing your hands, it’s understandable that hosting can be somewhat stressful. Here I have compiled a few tips to ensure you at least come across like you know what you’re doing so that your mother in law, boss or nosy next door neighbour thinks of you like a domestic King or Queen (on the surface anyway!)

  1. Use a toothbrush to get rid of those stringy bits on corn
  2. Brush your avocados with olive oil to keep them from going brown
  3. Put old sliced oranges and lemons in your water to give them a kick
  4. Keep your herbs in an airtight container to keep them crisp
  5. Rub half a potato or half an onion over your BBQ grill to make it non-stick
  6. Keep your strawberries in an airtight container full of water with a dash of vinegar to keep them fresh
  7. Double up when you’re making skewers – you’ll be able to turn them easily and you’ll avoid food falling off them
  8. Prep as much of the food as you can the day before and lay out glasses, plates etc. in advance
  9. Add a little salt to your iced water bucket – this will help the drinks cool down faster
  10. Clean up as you go. Nothing screams stressed out host more than a stressed out kitchen
